What to get right
- Ask about real calls. “Walk me through a no-heat on a 15-year-old furnace” shows more than “Are you a good troubleshooter?”
- Ask about the customer side. How they explain a repair-or-replace, or handle a homeowner who’s upset about the price.
- Know what good sounds like. Write it down before the interview so you’re not grading on charm.
- Keep it legal. Nothing about age, family plans, religion, health or national origin. Ask about the job.

Questions shops ask
What should I ask an HVAC technician in an interview?
Real troubleshooting scenarios, how they explain options to a homeowner, how they handle a callback, and what they’d need in their first 90 days.
Should I do a hands-on test?
Many shops do a ride-along or a short working interview on a test bench. If it’s more than a quick check, pay for the time.
What questions are off limits?
Anything about age, marital or family status, pregnancy, religion, health or disability, or national origin. Stick to the job and check your state’s rules.
